How to look up a Nepal postal code or ward code
Type a municipality or rural municipality name in English (for example, Kathmandu, Pokhara, Hetauda, or Phaktanglung), in Nepali Devanagari (such as काठमाण्डौ or पोखरा), or enter a 5-digit, 7-digit, or legacy postal code directly into the search bar. You can also filter the directory by selecting any of the 7 provinces and 77 districts from the dropdown menus. Once you locate your municipality card, select your ward number from the Ward code dropdown to reveal and copy the exact 7-digit ward postal code.
Understanding Nepal's new 5-digit and 7-digit federal postal code system
Following Nepal's transition to a federal structure of 7 provinces, 77 districts, and 753 local levels (6 Metropolitan Cities, 11 Sub-Metropolitan Cities, 276 Municipalities, and 460 Rural Municipalities), the General Post Office (GPO) / Postal Services Department introduced a hierarchical postal code system:
- First digit (Province code): Identifies the province from
1 (Koshi) to 7 (Sudur Paschim).
- Second and third digits (District code): Identify the district sequential code within that province (such as
06 for Kathmandu inside Bagamati Province).
- Fourth and fifth digits (Local level code): Identify the specific Municipality or Rural Municipality within the district (for example,
30608 for Kathmandu Metropolitan City).
- Sixth and seventh digits (Ward office suffix): Append a two-digit ward number (
01 through 33) to form a 7-digit ward-level code (such as 3060801 for Kathmandu Metropolitan City Ward No. 1).
When to use the new local-level code vs the legacy district postal code
Many international websites, payment gateways, Apple/Google account forms, and overseas courier portals still validate against Nepal's older 5-digit district postal codes (where Kathmandu is 44600, Lalitpur is 44700, Bhaktapur is 44800, Pokhara/Kaski is 33700, and Bharatpur/Chitwan is 44200).
