Accurate Devanagari Graphemes

Handles matras & halants

Uses modern browser grapheme segmentation so a Nepali consonant with an attached vowel mark counts as one visible character.

Paragraph & Sentence Totals

Recognizes purna biram

Counts sentences ending with Nepali purna biram (। or ॥) as well as standard English periods, question marks, and exclamation points.

Reading Time Estimate

At 200 words per minute

Provides an instant reading-time estimate for speeches, essays, news articles, and public service exam preparation.

How Nepali word and character counting works

Paste or type your Nepali or English passage into the text box above. Totals update on every keystroke. Words are counted as contiguous groups of characters separated by spaces or line breaks, while paragraphs are counted by non-empty blocks separated by blank lines.

Why Devanagari character counts can differ across software

In Unicode, a single visible Nepali syllable such as कि or को is stored as two code points (the base consonant plus the vowel sign), and a conjunct like क्ष is stored as three code points (क + ् + ष). Simple code-point counters inflate character totals for Nepali text. Yannis uses Intl.Segmenter grapheme clusters when supported by your browser so visible letter units are counted naturally.

Word and character targets for Nepali essays, news, and Lok Sewa exams

Whether you are drafting a 300-word Lok Sewa Aayog descriptive answer, a 160-character bilingual SMS notification, or a 1,000-word newspaper op-ed in Devanagari, keeping track of exact word and visible character limits prevents truncation. Because our counter recognizes both the Nepali purna biram (। and ॥) and standard Latin sentence terminators (., ?, !), sentence counts remain accurate even in pure Nepali prose where no English periods are used.

Common questions

Is my essay or document uploaded when I count words?

No. All counting happens locally inside your browser memory and is cleared as soon as you reset or close the tab.

How is estimated reading time calculated?

Reading time is calculated at an average pace of 200 words per minute, rounded up to the nearest minute.

Does the counter work for mixed Nepali and English documents?

Yes. You can paste bilingual articles, reports, or social media drafts and get combined word, character, and paragraph totals.

Why does a Nepali SMS take more segments than an English SMS of the same length?

Mobile networks transmit Devanagari Unicode using UCS-2 (16-bit) encoding, which limits a single SMS segment to 70 Unicode code points instead of 160 GSM-7 Latin characters.

Are punctuation marks like purna biram (।) counted as separate words?

Attached purna biram marks at the end of a word are part of that word token, while standalone sentence delimiters increment the sentence counter accurately.
