Roman PhoneticDevanagari UnicodeVowel & Conjunct Rules

1. Start with phonetic sounds, not English translations

Roman Nepali typing converts the sound of English letters into Nepali Devanagari characters. When you type namaste in our Nepali Typing tool, it produces namaste in Devanagari script. It does not translate English vocabulary into Nepali vocabulary.

2. Distinguishing short and long vowels

In Nepali, vowel length often changes the meaning of a word. Typing a single a or i produces a short vowel sound, whereas typing aa or ii produces the long vowel sign (matra). For example, pani commonly means "also", while paani clearly specifies "water".

3. Dental vs retroflex consonants (t/T and d/D)

Devanagari has two sets of T and D sounds. Lowercase t, th, d, and dh produce the softer dental letters (त, थ, द, ध). Capitalizing the first letter (T, Th, D, Dh) produces the retroflex letters (ट, ठ, ड, ढ) used in words like Thamel or Damauli.

4. Conjunct letters and Nepali punctuation

Common compound letters have dedicated shortcuts: ksh produces क्ष, tra produces त्र, and gy produces ज्ञ. To end a Nepali sentence with the traditional vertical full stop (purna biram), press the vertical bar key | on your keyboard.

5. Using word suggestions and manual edits

Whenever a phonetic spelling matches multiple Nepali words, suggestion buttons appear below the editor. You can also click directly inside the Nepali output box to adjust any character manually; doing so pauses live conversion so your corrections are never overwritten.

6. Common Nepali words that require careful vowel or consonant case

When writing formal Nepali correspondence, pay special attention to minimal pairs where vowel length or consonant retroflexion changes meaning: din (दिन, day) vs diin (दीन, poor/humble); pani (पनि, also) vs paani (पानी, water); and taal (ताल, lake/rhythm) vs Taal (टाल, patch). Reviewing the live candidate bar after each word helps you lock in the exact spelling before moving to the next word.
