Why the same Nepali word can store two different codes

Before Unicode became universal across operating systems, Nepali typists used legacy TrueType fonts such as Preeti, Kantipur, and Sagarmatha. Those fonts worked by replacing the visual shapes of English ASCII letters with Nepali glyph drawings. For example, in Preeti, typing lowercase s displays the shape of क on screen, even though the file still stores the Latin letter s.

When to use Nepali Unicode (UTF-8)

Unicode assigns a dedicated international code range (U+0900 to U+097F) specifically to Devanagari script. Use Unicode for:

  • Websites, blogs, news portals, and WordPress pages
  • Online government forms, citizenship portals, and tax filings
  • Emails, social media posts, and mobile messaging apps
  • Searchable PDFs and spreadsheets that must work on phones and computers without custom fonts installed

When a workflow still requires Preeti

Many printing presses, newspaper layout desks, and legacy Microsoft Word templates in Nepal are still formatted around the Preeti font. When an office requires a file in Preeti, you can write or proofread your text in Unicode first, then run it through our Unicode to Preeti converter and apply the Preeti font in your desktop editor.

Checklist for converting Preeti documents

Always copy selectable text rather than screenshots, separate English names or email addresses from Nepali paragraphs before converting, and proofread conjuncts and vowel marks (especially short ikar and reph) in the final output.

Step-by-step workflow for migrating an office archive from Preeti to Unicode

If your municipality, school, law firm, or media desk is migrating legacy Word documents from Preeti to UTF-8 Unicode, work paragraph by paragraph: copy the Preeti text, paste it into our Preeti to Unicode Converter, verify numbers and English abbreviations that were typed without switching fonts, and paste the resulting Unicode text into a clean document formatted with a standard Devanagari Unicode font such as Noto Sans Devanagari, Kalimati, or Mukta.
